The Forest Dweller • Lord of the Hills • God of War
There are innumerable tales concerning Murugan Aaiyyan in the ancient scriptures — from detailed volumes to poetic tales from the oral tradition (Shrutiyyan). He is known as the Forest Dweller (Murugan), Lord of the Hills (Malai Kilavan) and the God of War (Skanda).
In the spirit of true Hinduism, all stories are a greater part of the truth. There is one path but many pebbles, and many paths that lead up to the mountain summit.
Brahman is the all-knowing, all-pervading One — infinitely eternal. From Brahman emerged the Trimurti: Brahma (Creator), Vishnu (Preserver) and Shiva (Destroyer). Parvati, Shiva's companion, is the epitome of the Mother Goddess and part of the Tridevi.
In Aaiyyanist philosophy there are no true distinctions between male and female — only variations describing the holistic reality. Murugan is the merging of Shiva and Parvati into One, created by Shiva's third eye of wisdom and harmonised by Parvati's pure aspect.
Parvati gifted Murugan the Vel (spear) to destroy the powerful Asura Surapadman, who represents the ego-self. This was not a simple act but a narrative of profound depth revealing the true nature of reality.
The destroyer of the ego-self is Murugan, who represents the self. A part of the self must destroy itself. Murugan/Aaiyyan/Surapadman embodies the intense, hidden wisdom of the Gods — total destruction of this Universe, of the inner ego and of all barriers to knowledge.
